Contracting FAQs

Some of the questions we are asked most often by our new contractors

Q. What do I need to do to register interest for a Equiniti Hazell Carr contractor role?

A. You need to email your CV and covering letter to cv@hazellcarr.com where it will be looked at by a member of our Resourcing Team. They can also be contacted on 0118 951 3700.

Q. I understand Equiniti Hazell Carr compliance requires several checks to be carried out. What does this entail?

A. The checks Hazell Carr must comply with, some required by law, fall under the following categories:

Identity and legal right to work check:

  • Valid passport, with visa for non-EU citizens, or
  • Birth certificate with both parts of your driving licence and official documentation showing your NI number. e.g. NI card, HMRC letter, P45

Proof of address check:

  • Utility, credit card or bank statements, dated within 3 months of the start date of the contract. Note we cannot accept mobile phone bills or insurance documentation as proof of address

Employment check:

  • Information to cover the last 5 years including employment, unemployment and education
  • Gaps to be explained in Statement of Fact with gaps of over 1 month to be evidenced e.g. JSA, stamps in passport for travel

Verification of academic/professional qualifications

  • Sight of original or certified copies may be required for individuals with less than two years’ work experience
  • Sight of original or certified copies of qualifications relevant to role, such as actuarial and CII exams (FPC / CFP)

Please note - we cannot accept photographs of identity documents. Scans, copies and faxes are all acceptable.

Q. Do you also carry out credit and CRB checks?

A. Yes, these are increasingly being requested as standard requirements of all clients in the financial services sector. Failure of either of these does not automatically disqualify you from a placement, as it depends on client specifications. We do however, recommend you let us know in advance if you have had any credit or criminal issues in the past, so it can be managed at the outset.

Q. I’ve been offered a role through Equiniti Hazell Carr. What are the next steps?

A. You must first decide which type of company you will be contracting through: a limited company or an umbrella company.

Q. How do I go about setting up my own limited company?

A. Some umbrella companies can help with this, as can most high street accountants. Information is also available through Companies House.

Q. What are the compliance requirements if I opt to contract through a limited company?

A. You must provide us specific company details, such as:

  • Certificate of limited company registration
  • Proof of business bank account details – a void cheque, payment slip or account opening letter showing sort code and account number
  • Insurance
  • 1m Professional Indemnity Cover and Public Liability Cover
  • £5m Employers Liability only if the limited company you are contracting through employs more than one person
  • VAT certificate if you will be claiming back VAT

Q. If I decide to go through an umbrella company, can you recommend one?

A. Equiniti Hazell Carr is not affiliated with any umbrella company. A search on Google (or other search engine), for ‘umbrella company’ will provide you with names of those available in the market, as well as advantages and disadvantages of limited company vs. umbrella.

We would be happy to provide an indication of the ones most used at the time by our existing contractors, although we recommend you do your own research in terms of the fees charged and services offered.

Q. Can I change the company I contract through, mid-contract?

A. Yes. Please get in touch with your contact at Equiniti Hazell Carr who will explain the process to you.

Q. I am having trouble finding the right PI and PL cover. Can you recommend an insurance provider?

A. We would be happy to give you an indication as to which insurers our other contractors are with, however we recommend you do your own research in terms of the premium charged and insurance coverage.

It is your responsibility to ensure you are covered for the level and nature of the work you will be carrying out.
